Risk Thinking for Domestic and Family Violence Practice is an 87-page practical guide applying risk-management concepts and tools to individual domestic and family violence cases. It covers threat as capability plus disposition, adversarial risk, cumulative and compounding risk, scope and criteria, bow ties, control effectiveness, information quality, cognitive bias, escalation triggers and defensible decision-making. It also includes practical techniques such as Take 2, Stepback 5×5, CASE risk statements, the Four Cs and Four As, and a one-page approach to documenting a risk assessment so that another practitioner can understand the reasoning behind it.
 
The central idea is simple but important: it is possible to assess how dangerous a situation may be without first deciding who is at fault. The guide separates the assessment of risk from judgments about blame or culpability and provides structured ways to describe uncertainty, evidence, controls, and consequences. 
 
 
This is not a replacement for a jurisdictional or agency-mandated domestic and family violence risk assessment instrument, nor is it a validated assessment tool. It is a companion resource for better risk thinking — designed to supplement existing professional expertise and mandated processes.
